A Little Bit of History
History of the Carousel Figure Skating Club
The Carousel Figure Skating Club was founded in 1969 by coach Leone Spalding and her husband, David, who met at the Saskatoon Figure Skating Club, where he was head coach. They worked together at the club until David's death in 1985, and Leone remained a major contributor to the club and the wider skating community until she retired in 2014. Based in the Portland area, the club became a welcoming, mentor-driven community. Leone was remembered by current club leaders as motherly and welcoming, and her legacy is still felt by many in Portland's skating community.
The club was formally recognized as a nonprofit around 2005, when its tax-exempt status was granted in May 2005. In 2012, Carousel merged with the Sherwood Figure Skating Club to form the Carousel Sherwood Figure Skating Club. The merged club continues to honor Leone's memory through its traditions and has gained a reputation for strong skaters and programs across the Portland area.
In recent years, the club has focused on growing the sport locally. Carousel FSC became based at the Lloyd Center Ice Rink, and a group of its coaches formed the Pacific Ice Academy under the club's umbrella. The club also works with the rink and Axis on Ice to offer skaters multiple pathways, with the aim of developing both athletes and coaches in the Pacific Northwest.
